Sewer Line Repair in Fort Myers

Recurring backups, sewer odors or soggy patches in the yard often point to a damaged sewer line. Here’s how Fort Myers plumbers diagnose it and what the repair options look like.

Warning signs of a sewer line problem

• More than one drain clogging at the same time, again and again
• Gurgling toilets, or water rising in the tub when you flush
• Sewage odors inside or outside the house
• Unusually green or soggy patches of lawn along the sewer route
• Cracks in the slab or pests (roaches, rats) coming from drains

What goes wrong with sewer lines here

Cast iron corrosion: Many Fort Myers homes built before the mid-1970s have cast iron drain pipes. Over decades, hydrogen sulfide gas and moisture corrode them from the inside, leaving the bottom of the pipe rough, cracked or eaten through. That’s often called “channeling.”

Root intrusion: Tree roots enter through joints and cracks and grow into dense masses that catch waste.

Bellies and offsets: Sandy soil settles, creating sags where waste collects or joints that shift out of line.

Storm damage: Flooding and uprooted trees during hurricanes can crack or shift buried pipes.

Start with a camera inspection

A sewer camera inspection shows exactly what’s happening and where. Ask the plumber to show you the footage and mark the location and depth of any problem. If you’re getting quotes for a big repair, it’s reasonable to ask for a copy of the video.

Repair options

Spot repair: dig down to one damaged section and replace it. This works well when the rest of the line is sound.

Full replacement by excavation: trench and replace the lateral with PVC. It’s straightforward but disrupts landscaping, driveways or floors.

Trenchless lining (CIPP): a resin-soaked liner is inserted and cured inside the old pipe, creating a new pipe within the old one. It needs a pipe that’s still intact enough to line.

Pipe bursting: a new pipe is pulled through as the old one is broken outward. It needs access pits at each end.

Under-slab drain lines inside the house are a separate job from the yard lateral and may involve tunneling or cutting the floor. Ask exactly which section a quote covers.

Who’s responsible: you or the utility?

In general, homeowners are responsible for the sewer lateral from the house to the connection at the property line or cleanout. The utility maintains the public main. Where exactly that line falls depends on your utility (City of Fort Myers, Lee County Utilities, or your own city), so check before paying for work near the street.
